Mokveld supplied four axial choke valves for Porthos, the Dutch Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Project.
The Netherlands has set ambitious climate targets: by 2030, greenhouse gas emissions must be reduced by at least 55% compared to 1990 levels, and the country aims to be climate neutral by 2050. To help achieve these goals, the Dutch Climate Agreement identifies Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) as a key measure for CO₂ reduction. This approach aligns with broader European policy, including the Net-Zero Industry Act (NZIA), which supports the development and deployment of strategic technologies like CCS to strengthen Europe’s industrial base while accelerating the transition to climate neutrality.
In the ‘Porthos’ project, CO₂ is captured in gaseous form at companies in the Rotterdam port area. It is then transported through a pipeline from the companies to the Porthos compressor station. There, the CO₂ is compressed and transported through a pipeline to an offshore platform, where the Mokveld choke valves provide the final control step before the CO₂ is actually injected into the depleted gas field.
In collaboration with Porthos, Mokveld designed and produced four injection chokes, which inject CO₂ from the platform into the gas field. Based on the technical specifications and criteria such as reliability, control, lifespan, as well as corrosion resistance and sealing technology, the axial choke design, known from Mokveld, was chosen. This design efficiently allows for CO₂ injection.
First, in close cooperation with Porthos, all possible scenarios were reviewed that could arise when transporting the CO₂, to determine whether one type of choke would be sufficient to handle all these scenarios. The challenge for this project is that we had to find a valve solution for CO₂ injection in both the gas- and dense phase, in which we succeeded with these chokes.
